Fence posts are in

More progress has been made on the fence despite the wet weather we've had the past few days.

Late last week, Jason was slapping on the oil based primer on the hardwood fence posts. They had to be primed before going into the ground. Jason put his hand up for that job...as you do...The primer protects the wood and gives it a fighting chance against rot.

That's Jason painting the posts before work one morning.
Mr D was here early on Saturday morning to concrete the posts into the ground. Jason wanted to make himself useful and hung around Mr D for most of the morning.

Jason has a blatant disregard for safety given his predilection for bare feet while helping Mr D. Mr D is thankfully not so cavalier.

Mr D who studied Forestry confirmed my suspicions about the Kwila timber for our fence and said we may as well paint the fence posts red as they are not orangutan-friendly. We've never really been aware about the sustainability aspect of purchasing timber, mistakenly assuming that the timbers which enter Australian shores would be sourced from well-managed forests...but it's not always.

You can read about buying imported timber from Timber Queensland if you want to be informed and feel confident about your purchasing choices.

The posts waiting for concrete
This morning we weeded out the front garden beds which were looking quite sad. It's a bit tidier now, ready for Mr D to construct the rest of the fence.

Showery weather has been predicted this week, so we have our fingers crossed that it won't hold up the fence progress.

  1. Do you guys ever rest?! You are amazing!

Can't wait to see how the fence looks when it's all done. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the rain stays away!

    Best wishes,
    Natasha.

  2. This wet weather is really a pain at the moment for those of us who want to get stuck into a project. We have landscaping to do and whilst the wet weather makes the digging/planting easier, it's not allowing us to spray the weeds first & paint the fence before the new plants go in. Better not complain about the abundant water though. Btw ... how's that troublesome French car going???

  3. Fence posts never go out of fashion, do they Bris?

A friend of mine told me he watched his neighbour steal his garden gate the other day, and I asked why he didn't stop him. My mate said, "Because he might take offence." ('a fence' - gedditt??? never mind.)

  4. I don't understand why we would allow timber to be imported that isn't orangutan friendly? It seems strange in this day and age. I struggle with these things a bit. I'm into sustainable use of timber but sometimes feel a bit guilty about having a wood fire. It doesn't pay to think too much :)

  5. Hi I have some fencing work to be done in Brisbane and would love to know Mr. D's contact details or enough clues to track him down.
    Thanks. JEA.

  6. Can't wait to see the fence finished! A white timber fence is high on my wish list, but I think the yard will have to wait until the rest of the house is at least manageable (oh, and it would have to wait until this *** rain stopped anyway!) :)

  8. Thanks for the plug for Timber Queensland! Australia will be introducing illegal logging prohibition laws which will prevent situations like yours - however it will be 2-3 years before they will be fully implemented. Another great place you can find timber information is www.naturallybetter.com.au. From time to time I will include some information about sourcing sustainable timber on my blog - I'd better make sure all that's used in my reno is up to scratch!!

  9. Thanks everyone!
LMAG, Jason's car is running well... Touch wood.
    Tom, groan!
Anon, I got your email, but I'll check with Mr D to see if he's happy for me to pass on his number...just in case.
FF, hardly ever Anouk way. Will have to venture out there again.
Clarissa, I'd forgotten you were at TQ! So good to hear about the legislation coming through.
    xx

  10. Exciting stuff. A fence to a house is like eyebrows to the face. Or something like that. Look forward to seeing the progress. Jason is such a risque footloose fencer. x
