Letterboxes

When we decided on the fence style for the Sow's Ear, we forgot about including a letterbox into the whole  scheme of things. Because of the style of fence we will be opting for a post mount letterbox which sits slightly higher than the top fence rail..

Anyway, holy letterbox choices! When I went looking on the Internet and at the letterbox shops I was hit with a plethora of choices...But not all letterboxes suit our requirements.

We don't want a letterbox which needs a key to remain shut as we like to be unimpeded when we check the mail. It needs to be large enough to accept large envelopes and small parcels (because Jason is an eBay junkie) that the Postie can leave easily.

We also want to have a slightly rounded letterbox because our fence is on a slope and was constructed following the lie of the land. We think a round letterbox would suit it best.

Anyway, here are our favourites:

Cadrona Letterbox

Classic post mount copper mailbox
I don't know whether this mailbox can be shipped to Australia. Boo!

  1. Ooh! House nice is the copper one? It would age so beautifully & look fabulous in a garden. I think we're just going to have to go with a slit in the fence. Mind you, if I lived in Gladstone, I'd feel compelled to have a cement letterbox shaped as a tree trunk with either a possum or a koala on it. They're eveywhere in that city!

  2. I love me some kitsch Australiana. But the concept of a copper letterbox really appeals to me. xx

  3. Oh the copper one! Absolutely beautiful. And if that's not possible, the first, with its air of casual surveillance.

  4. Choosing a letterbox for our house I swear actually took more time than deciding on some really important stuff. My husband had a vision and wouldn't rest until he achieved the style he wanted. Makes me laugh now but at the time...
    Good luck deciding.

  6. The copper one is lovely, but I bet it's exy. You just about have to sell a kidney to afford anything in copper these days!

  7. First one. Most simple. What Australian postman/woman flicks a flag?

  8. I agree with MMMC- the top one is my pick too. melx

  9. LOVE the middle one with '53' on it. Looks like something that the Jetsons cartoon would have had in that 1950's vision of the future. VERY cool!

  10. I covet the first one. Plain and strong. My husband recently bought a locking one and I have't collected the mail since!

  11. These are all gggreat but the COPPER one is brill! That'd be my first pick. Of course, in Philadelphia, that would probably get stolen pretty quickly (copper is worth a lot these days...). But if that's a non-issue, I'd say go for it! I like the first pic as 2nd choice, it reminds me of a 1960's airstream

  12. I am coming over in May, and will be flying up to Brisbane - are you tempted? (and I once lugged books, tools and a barometer across the pond, so a mailbox is nothing!)

  13. Lets face it the last one is fantastic, but mmmc makes a good point. I like the second one, perhaps because of the green it is pictured in reminds me a bit of yours. xxx

  15. The first one has a mod Ned Kelly look to it, but the copper one is stunning... I have family I could get it shipped to! Mark is thinking of building his own one... I guess I will have to see how that turns out.

  16. The copper one is typically/classicly American and not good for a Queenslander. Maybe you should think about the lock up letterbox with all the identity theft going on - it happened to a friend of mine and it took months for ther to sort it out and she was really stressed in that time and it was all so unnecessary.

  17. Like number one, reeeaaally like number three, but most especially love that green spiky beauty behind number two - a floral equivalent to the crazy dog in the Postie's Compendium of Occupational Hazards.

  19. All great options - do love the Mrs Kelly though.

Have you seen the TomTom letterbox? Dig the colours...

I'd have a hard time choosing between the blue, orange and the yellow!!

The fence is looking great too xx

  20. You had me at copper! That copper mail box is pretty awesome, but the first round one is pretty cool too. I'll have to stalk your house to see how it all looks in real life.

  21. Thanks for all your feedback. I am tempted with the copper one but it is probably the wrong style for the Queenslander as Natalia said. Tricia Rose if you're in Brisbane we must meet up if you have time.
Pele, the tom tom letter boxes are very cute but Jason is not a fan...
I'll keep you all posted with what we decide (pardon the pun!)
