1960s bathroom fittings: an update

Remember how we were searching high and low for that elusive towel rail bracket for our bathroom? You can read here if you missed it.

Well, we found it. Actually, we didn't find it...a blog reader did! Thanks so much Alex!

I received an email from Alex alerting me to an eBay listing selling Art Deco bathroom fittings. Never in a million years did I expect to find the exact same towel rail bracket under that heading. I was mistakenly searching for terms like 1960s, retro, modernist and mid-century!

The tip of the day is look under the term Art Deco when all things fail in your search for mid-century items!

I was able to approach the seller and ask if he would consider selling the towel rail separately...which he very kindly did. The towel rail was from Melbourne of all places. Great that it can have a permanent holiday in sunny Queensland.

The towel rails are extra. extra long - perfect for our family of five. I forgot to hang my towel up!

Jason installed the bracket straight away and we've been enjoying the luxury of matching towel rails. Hahaha!

Anyway, it's the small things which make all the difference.

  1. Hello:

What a really happy outcome and such a stylish one too. Like you, we find the length of the rails both useful and purposeful.

  2. Fantastic!! I had not realise how long they were, it really would have been a shame if you could not have kept these in use wouldn't it. They look great though and as you say so useful and so in keeping! How kind of your friend to point you in the right direction to get the replacement! Another job that you can tick off the list now! xx

  5. Some of our best finds are the result of just putting in a search term as generic as "towel rail." Unfiltered searches are long and tedious, but it's amazing what they turn up, because most people don't have a clue what era their things are from or who the designer was. They just make up the details as they type the listing. I'm so glad you were able to find your replacement part so quickly. The rails look great, and that tile is spectacular!

    1. I should have tried that Dana. And so true - most people don't know what they have when it comes to fixtures and fittings. It's great to be able to have the towel rails up and that tile is so yummy. We have to fix a few of the white tiles though...they seem to have suffered more over the years but it's all fixable...I hope. xx
