It's odd the things you don't quite see until you take the time.
One side of the old barn door to the laundry is unpainted (the other side is orange). After three years living here at the Sow's Ear, using this door almost every day to do the laundry, I've only just realised.
It's really noticeable now that Jason has lined the under the house area with off-white VJ sheets. Really noticeable.
What a great old door with its old rim lock though. Jason built plain but rustic style architraves to give the door that certain gravitas.
I suggested to Jason that perhaps we could just give the door a good sand and paint a protective coat of Estapol satin to finish it off. He looked at me like I was out of my mind and just said, 'White."
That's that I suppose...what would you do?
Old barn style door in a Queenslander. We'll have some more painting to do with all the new walls up |
Who'll be using this room the most? How about continuing the orange paint around to the inside? At least he won't have to cut in...
ReplyDeleteWe have that debate quite often. Old wood stairs, sand and stain or paint? I am winning so far.....
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, just stain/finish it!
ReplyDeleteI like it left unpainted too. A bit of whimsy perhaps...
ReplyDeleteFor nice old wood, I waive my painting rule. White in a few years, if you change your mind.
ReplyDeleteIf it were me I'd also prefer to leave it unpainted, (in which case architraves should be off white, same as the walls) but there's a couple of areas that look like filler...?
ReplyDeleteIf you have to cover up I'd go for a completely different colour. Nice French Grey perhaps? Depends on what's going on in the room. Not sure about white though.
Ooh, it that's the door above, definitely leave it wooden, its gorgeous! x
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on this one. I think it would really be a nice warm feature under the house and would give the chance to do a bit more of an industrial look with some nice shelving etc.. I think it would suit the purpose of the room. You could always go with your idea and then if you don't like it paint straight over. But once it's painted...it's painted.
ReplyDeleteI just noticed the black on the step....what do you think about gloss black repainted step next to rustic timber door and white walls?
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely. I'd leave it, maybe just a bit of an oil and if you decide later on you are not keen, then paint it.
ReplyDelete:)
I love my wood unpainted--but marital harmony does have to be considered.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and I would leave it natural. It will add a bit of character to the room which will be lost once it is painted white ... it is such a lovely door you need to make a feature out of it and it tells a bit of a story. If you paint it white it will just blend into the vj walls ... you could just go get any old ordinary door from Doors Plus for that effect.

I agree with Katherine - black step, rustic timber door - sorry Jason.

ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the feedback regarding the door. I have a feeling we will be keeping it rustic and not painting it...cross fingers. xx
ReplyDeleteI think leaving it as is would look fantastic with all the white but frankly I think you have buckleys of winning this one. I would fight for rustic and then cave in at the last minute for perhaps say a new kitchen aid accessory..... melx
ReplyDeleteI agree - leave as is. It looks fantastic
ReplyDeleteWe have the same door in our OTH room. One has a window in it and the other is like yours. I love it unpainted too. It shows all those years of dings and patches. My husband wants to completely replace it with a new door! The heathen!
