There's a line of thought in the hoarding world that you need to own three objects (of the same genre/maker/artist) before you can call it a 'collection'.
I own two pieces of Israeli ceramics, which I've found quite recently, so my little pots are one off from being classified a bona fide 'collection'. And they are two of the smallest pieces that one could find.
The first piece is a candle holder (like I needed another one in my life) which was made by Lapid Pottery Works in Israel.
The author of Retro Pottery Net has written a bit about this type of pottery, which you can read here. It seems there is not much information documented about Lapid, although it is quite collectable among pottery geeks and mid-century enthusiasts.
It has a very distinct Modernist style which I like very much. You can usually find Lapid on eBay, etsy and, if you're lucky enough, at the op-shops.

The next piece of Israeli pottery is a small bud vase with blue and turquoise stripes (vase at very front of the image below). It is made by Beit Hayotser pottery cooperative. Again you can read Retro Pottery Net's information on the pottery works from Southern Israel here.
It is only the simplest of vases with minimal ornamentation, but it is a lovely piece to start off the 'collection'. The small vessel works in well with the Lapid candle holder and some of my West and East German pots (there is also a rogue Australian (I think) and a cheeky Italian vase in among the mix).
So have you kick-started a collection yet? Tell me what you collect and what you have your eyes peeled for...
Loving the Lapid. It looks fabulous with your other ceramics. Do any of the boys show any interest in your collections? Mine don't, if that's any consolation.
ReplyDeleteThey each have a little West German for their rooms/shelf, which they're reluctant to give up. But no, they're not terribly interested at the moment - I'm just hoping being surrounded by it will give them an appreciation later in life. xx
DeleteThe op-shop Gods love you! I have had no luck lately, clearly I did something wrong. I tend to gravitate towards the Japanese ceramics, with those lovely glazes!
ReplyDeleteOh, the Lapid pieces are stunning, and so is the rest of that gorgeous group standing there on those amazing red beauties:-) I've never seen Lapid pieces around here, it would be fantastic to find one!
ReplyDeleteI adore the cool colours of that sweet little bud vase! So pretty. I try very hard not to "collect" things as I can see myself easily getting out of control. In saying that I do collect old ceramic and glass insulators (off of power lines etc) but have so far refused to purchase any online. I have the word out that I'm always open to any that people find in the bush etc. The Husband is a sparky, so they have a little sentimental value for me, plus some of the colours are to die for.
ReplyDeleteI've seen some gorgeous pieces of Lapid on eBay, and I've always been tempted to start a collection, but with my obsession over birds and West German pottery, I don't dare.
ReplyDeleteYour Israeli pieces are beautiful! They're making my self-control waver.
My favourite thing to collect is crystal craft flowers. You might have seen them.....resin flowers with wire stems on a resin base. I also collect rabbits, old coloured knitting needles, crochet granny blankets. Okay I am going to stop now!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI do love artglass and have a very particular collection of small items, a few vases and bowls, which I only use rarely on special occasions. My mum would love your pottery collection!
ReplyDeleteThey are perfectly in tune with mid-century modern, and I suspect Orla Kiely will be popping by your blog to look at them for design inspiration. Good luck with the third piece!
ReplyDeleteHa! I was thinking of a way of reinventing the pattern and starting up my own empire. Unfortunately, I don't have the audacity to pull it off!! xx
