Kitchen pendant lights

As some of you may already know, we are on the hunt for some new kitchen lights to replace some rather impractical ones we installed when we first renovated the kitchen. Read about it here.

The brief for the lights is: it must not harbour any possible creepy crawly...the lights must allow the bugs to free-fall on to our kitchen bench instead. The fun of living in sub-tropical Queensland without fly screens!

I saw a couple of lights at the Woolloongabba Antique Centre on the weekend, which would fit the brief well. Both are vintage and very attractive.

Anodised tubular lights from 1960s?

Scandinavian style brass lights which I completely adore...it may not actually suit our more traditional style kitchen in the Sow's Ear...it's still a contender though because they're just so damn attractive to me.
I have also been browsing online to see what is available.

Artek hand grenade light
The Alvar Aalto designed A110 hand grenade light is modelled on the German grenades which were used during WWII and military-mad Jason has a very soft spot for them. He might want to throw them at me, I suspect, in his moments of frustration...Ha!

I have previously featured the Jorn Utzon light on the blog. They now come in copper...which is very on trend. I do prefer the more plain, less glitzy style.

And I have always wanted a Nelson Bubble lamp. I may be able to get away with the small cigar lamps (first designed in 1952) suspended over our kitchen island.

I'm going to bite the bullet this week and finally settle on new kitchen lights. Have you got any other suggestions?

  1. For some reason I found choosing pendant lights one of the hardest parts of the reno. We don't having a kitchen island bench, but our dining table will sit in the kitchen and I ended up going with bare bulb pendants (they're low cost and will do for now if/when I decide to pick something else.) The hand grenade was an option that OVP put forward in the early days as well as the Artek Golden Bell, which also comes in black, white and chrome. But I did manage to find a spot for a GN Bubble Lamp - they are delish! It might not be your thing but I was seriously looking at the ceramic Pendant Lights from Mud Australia - Anchor Ceramics have recently launched a similar product too. Ah decisions, decisions....xx

  2. They're such beauties all of them, but the Artek and the Scandi one in black and brass are the ones that really make me drool. The grenade lamp was one of the runners up for m new kitchen. I ended up choosing a budget version, though, keeping in mind that they can be replaced later. They're very simple black cylinders. If you're into the bare bulb kind, Muuto has some really cool ones. I can see our taste in lamps is quite similar, I'm looking forward to seeing which ones you choose:-)

  3. PS: I've been swooning over this one lately, it's probably too big for your particular kitchen pendant needs, but oh my, it's worth a look!!! Very 60s Scandinavia:-) http://www.atomicinteriors.co.uk/product/light-years-orient-suspension-lamp

    1. Thanks Tove. I'm drooling too. They're actually not so big...considering our current lighting situation! Love and more food for thought for me. Xx

  4. I think whatever you choose will be perfect. Don't choose something that you'll regret leaving behind if you ever sell the house that's my only advice. If you're planning on staying there forever, buy the light that you love to bits and will love looking at in 10 years time. Not everyone who buys a property has your high-end sensibilities. I do love the Utzon!

  5. I love all your choices, but I keep going back to the Utzon copper one and the gorgeous Jo Hammerborg one Tove suggested. I've never seen a Fog & Morup light I didn't like!

    1. So true Dana, I've never seen a Fog & Morup that I didn't like either. I loved the one that Tove suggested too. All you girls have been giving me fabulous feedback - so lucky to have you reading!! xx

  6. Love the brass and black Scandinavian style ones, but all your selections are fantastic. I rushed my kitchen lighting choices when we renovated our kitchen, so I'm also looking at lights. Lots of great designs so making a decision is the hard part!

  7. There are some great vintage Art Deco lights that would suit both the house and your modernist look. The light shop on Windsor Rd in Red Hill is an absolute treasure trove. Might be worth a look if you want even more options to confuse yourself with! Mind you any of the above would look brilliant too ....

  8. All of these lights are fantastic lights. I think I like the Artek hand grenade light the best. It would suit a more modern kitchen of course. Thanks for showing us these many lights.
