Books for Christmas and a huge giveaway!

This post is brought to you by Bookworld

Books: they are one of my go-to gift choices during the silly season because the love of reading and an appreciation of the written word should always be encouraged.

Christmas is also a time of year that most people tend to unwind and take days off so books, especially among my friends and family, are a much appreciated gift.

The inky smell and crisp touch of a new book, yet to be discovered, is the most delectable of feelings. It doesn’t matter if it is a literary novel, design book or beautifully presented cook book – the promise of what is inside those pages is seductive.

I am super-organised this year and I’ve already bought the children some books to go with their toys on Christmas day.  But I didn’t realise the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid Book 8: Hard Luck was out and now I will need to get a copy for my boys - they’re nuts for that serial and are loyal Greg Heffley fans.

On my wish list this year are a few design and cook books and Bookworld has a huge selection of popular and affordable titles which will fit the bill.

I’m eyeing off Donna Hay’s The New Classics and New Suburban: Reinventing The Family Home In Australia And New Zealand by Stuart Harrison. I love having books on my coffee table to flick through over the Christmas holidays.

And in big news we have a $150 book pack to give away to make sure that you and yours are busy reading this Christmas too. What a terrific prize!

All you have to do to win the Bookworld book pack is to leave a comment below telling us what genre of book you love best.

Entries close Tuesday 19 November 2013 with Jason selecting his most favourite response. Only Australian readers may enter and you must have a valid email with your response so that we can contact you as soon as possible.

Good luck!

EDIT: Congratulations to Courtney from Foodmuster who won the Bookworld book pack! Thanks to everyone who entered the competition. xx

  1. I love any type of book-classic, trashy, recipe, style and decorating, gardening, Young Adult-anything but vampire or zombie fiction really! Books are my favourite present to give and receive! x

  2. As a former literature teacher and librarian, I love the smell of a book and the heft of one in my hands and continue to buy them, even though (if I put my vanity aside) I have to admit that using my Kindle and being able to adjust the size of the print is so much easier at my age! I always got books for Christmas, as did my daughter and my grandsons. We've always been a book-loving family. The ones you've shown in your post look great.

  4. I don't have a favourite genre as I just love to read in general, but if pushed I guess I'd have to say general fiction and autobiographies - you always learn the most interesting things about other people. Don't mind a recipe book either - so I can plan all those Nigella-style dinner parties I imagine having but never really do!

  5. Massive fan of Chick Lit! But then again I collect books, so any type of genre! xoxo

  6. If something has words on it then I'll read it.
Has got me into trouble with hubby in the supermarket with reading the contents on packets and jars.
A main love is cook books I'll read from cover to cover then start testing out the recipes on the family

  7. I love picture books as much as I enjoy literary fiction, art and cookbooks. When the different genres meet things get really exciting!

  8. You know how much I love a good book. My favourite genre would have to be children's books - a well-written children's book would be incredibly hard to achieve. So much to say in so few pages.

  9. Geepers! I love all kinds of books but my biggest challenge these days is to find the time to enjoy them. Most of my booking leisure revolves around cook books because I don't spend too much time reading/perusing them. Earlier this year I put my life and household on hold literally to complete the The Hunger Games series. Now if I pick up a book my kids call Grandma and hubby threatens to work late!!! That being said, my kids are happy to hear me read to them. We will be reading the next Gladiator (young version) book in the series, which I will begin to read to them at night then once they are off to sleep I continue to read because I can't put it down. I really am terrible!!

  10. Mmmmm..... that previous comment must have meant to read "COOK" as in cookbooks! Yes I love cookbooks too (and I own quite a few) but I can't go past a good design or architectural book. I also love to give books as gifts and have some stashed away for XMAS presents for the kids. I do having trouble finding time to read them these days, but that's about to change!! xx

  12. I love books about vintage style.....whether that be home decorating & design, clothing, make up, the history of fashion. Anything old really. I'm always coveting beautiful books but it's a treat I rarely indulge in because the books I am drawn to often cost an arm & a leg! Leisa

I'll be honest, chick lit trash is my guilty pleasure! It's the same buzz I get from reading gossip magazines, you know it's total crap but it's so satisfying!

  15. I love a good thriller that has me stumped..

  16. I love a good design book, have to agree the smell always gets me! Stuart's new book is on my list, Perfect for my new coffee table!

  17. Crime. I'm a bit psychotic and love reading books that involves a dead body.

  18. I love Crime and Mystery (always fancied I would one day be a forensic scientist or detective) but I am an avid reader of historical fiction especially British and European history but we love and devour Cookbooks! We have books on all cuisines of the world, that is as good as a geography lesson in many ways!

  19. Holy Schmoly! One genre! The chillun's books are high up but I do love a good Geraldine Brooks or something about angsty artistic mothers, aka "Notes on an Exhibition". With somebody else's money though I'd spend up on those outrageously expensive art books that tell you about the artist's life as well. The Artist's Lunch is one I have eyed off for a while making both the eyes and mouth water- in a good way.

  21. There is not a favourite genre when it comes to books,
Whether it be true crimes, chick lit or one for the cooks.
Any that captivates and takes me on a ride,
I'll read almost anything that makes me laugh, think or cry!

  22. I love reading fantasy/sci-fi books the most but they can't be really Out There... they have to have a semblance of truth about them... be vaguely believable so you have the ability to connect with them. Children of the Mind by Orson Scott Card is a good example of the sort of book I love - really readable and fantasy-like yet interwoven with a touch of the real world. If you know what I mean. ;-)

  23. My favourites are non-fiction, biographies are usually interesting and I've learnt heaps from them. But I love all books, my dream (litterally) when I was a kid was that I would be accidentially locked in a library for the night! I bought the new Diary of a Whimpy Kid book for my son for Christmas too, he will love it! They are awesome books for kids, I love the movies too.

  25. I guess deep down I want to break out of my nerdy law-abiding goodie two-shoes life as I always end up reading true crime, gangster, underworld non-fiction. Great bedtime reading! - jason.d.davidson@gmail.com

  26. A good design or history book always gets my attention. Although a coffee table book about coffee tables, now that I would buy...

  27. I've been sitting here for ten minutes and haven't been able to make up my mind which genre I love the best. All genres have something to offer avid readers like me. I love to be romanced, scared out of my wits, learn something new, go on an adventure and be entertained. All from the comfort of my favourite chair.

  28. I don't so much have a favourite genre, I just tend to jump 'on the bandwagon' and read whatever is currently trending. I've been into everything from Harry Potter to Twilight to Fifty Shades of Grey.

  37. I love all books! But the ones I spend the most money on are craft, sewing and quilting books. They have to have beautiful inspiring pictures and lots of clear instructions to get me in, but then I will spend megabucks!

  56. You wouldn't know it to look at me, but I love to read TRASHY books.. The trashier the better.. That kind of trash that you'd throw down the side of your bed if your Mum entered the room. The sort of trash that you could never admit to a Priest you read it, and would even blush if your best friend found it in your drawers.. It's the trashy books that give you the best dreams! ;)
