Bitossi lamp

It was swaddled in butcher's paper and placed gently into my arms to take home...like a newborn. I carefully strapped it into the booster seat in the car to make sure it was safe on the journey home. It didn't even cry.

Yes, we have a new addition to the family. A Bitossi table lamp.

When I spotted the lamp at the Paddington Antiques Centre last week, I knew I loved it...particularly as there was a gift voucher for the antiques centre (a birthday gifts, thanks V & G!) burning a hole in my pocket...

Paddington Antiques is a great place for fossicking - I first discovered Dansk Vintage when they used to have a presence there and it was always worth checking out if you liked your furniture mid-century and Danish.

Another new favourite is Shop 28, it's the one with all the vintage lights, run by a very friendly fellow called Keith. Keith confided in me that he has a penchant for collecting Corningware Casserole dishes (y'know the ones with the little blue flower) and I instantly liked him.

His stall is pretty awesome if you are looking for interesting or vintage lighting. There was quite a bit of Art Deco and funky retro style lights...great if you're trying to restore an old home or are re-decorating in a particular style.

My Bitossi lamp with a rather unsuitable light shade. I let Keith keep the shade.
Shop 28 in Paddington Antiques Centre. Lots to choose from!

I took a photo of this pendant light as my parents have the exact same one in their home.
They'll laugh when they see their light in an antiques centre!
Now that I have my new lamp, I have to find a more suitable light shade for it. The one it came with was not to my liking and I left it with Keith.

Most of the new shades which are so fashionable right now are too short and squat...I much prefer tall and slightly tapered and yes, so unfashionable at the moment...which means it will be difficult to source at retail lighting stores.

So now begins a light shade search. Wish me luck.

This is the style shade that I like

  2. Op-shops, that's where you'll find the shade of your dreams!
I love your new lamp, it's a beauty.
I am going to have little look at the link to Keith's, I need lamps for our bedroom and a light fitting for our kitchen - not having much luck here. I'd love a Dragon's Tears like yours on the cheap, wishful thinking I fear.

    1. Thanks Kylie. I will do an op-shop run over the next couple of weeks and see if I find any...but those shades are few and far between up here sadly... I saw a small dragon's tear chandy at the antiques centre with clear crystals. xx

  3. Your new lamp is so, so beautiful. You had me at Bitossi.

I usually have shades custom-made, because I'm way too impatient to wait till I find the perfect one for a song. Sometimes I run across people at antique malls who make shades, but usually I order them online. They're not prohibitively expensive, but if you have the patience to wait, Kylie's suggestion is probably better.

  4. You know I am slightly, make that completely, jealous of that lamp. You really hit the motherload there! I would have cradled it too. If it were mine, I'd head to somewhere like AP Designs in Paddington and get a lamp shade custom-made for it. It's not like you're not going to have it forever, so worth the investment. I really am jealous and may have to sulk a bit when I see you next!!

    1. Ha! I'm sure the lamp of your dreams will be around the corner soon. Thanks for the AP Design tip. And look, I'll give instructions to Jason to give the lamp to you, if ever I kick the bucket. No one around here will want it after I'm gone. xx

  5. Oh my, how I love that lamp!!! It's a stunner, what a great find, congratulations! Good luck with your hunt for a shade, I know what you mean about the modern shades, I've been searching a long time for tapered ones too... I did end up with a really cheap one from Swedish company Åhlens (they have lots of stores over here, the stuff is prized like Ikea) for my Søholm. It's not at all perfect, but will do until my dream shade comes along. Enjoy your new love:-)

    1. It's a beauty! Thanks. And I hadn't realised tapered shades were so unfashionable until I bought my lamp. You cant find them anywhere in lighting stores. xx

  7. Fantastic lamp! I love it's colours. I went on a hunt for the perfect and not too expensive lamp shade once, it lasted about a year and I actually found the perfect one at Masters (I think it's Tingalpa), they actually have a varied and affordable range there.

The Paddington Antique centre is an amazing place to spend an afternoon!
