The fence

We're in the process of obtaining quotes to reconstruct our front fence which is in a very sorry state. The plan is to have a fence which is in a style that is consistent to the age of the Sow's Ear - inter-war period circa 1928.

There are no old images of the Sow's Ear that we are aware of to indicate what the original fence may have been. We are relying on information from heritage reference books and the fence styles that are used on other period homes in our neighbourhood. It is basically an educated guess...rather than a complete stab in the dark.

The images below illustrate the style we have chosen.

Our new fence will be similar to this fence. It is actually not too different from our current fence which doesn't have the double top rail.
This image is from the Brisbane City Council's Heritage unit which has heritage fact sheets online. Here

This is our old fence which we'll be replacing.  Most of the posts are rotted through. Poor old fence. It's beyond redemption.
I'll let you know when work begins.

  1. That extra bit of detail on the top of the fence really makes it doesn't it...look forward to seeing the progress. Like everything you do, I'm sure it will be wonderful.

  2. Very much like the new fence you have chosen. Betsy has a funny old fence with a double top rail, but wire below instead of pickets. And then the ornate wire front and driveway gates. We thought it was odd initially but has grown on us and quite a few houses near us are the same. BTW any progress on the reno rescue house near you? melx

  3. Hey, found you on houseblogging. I'm a long way off, in the US (Philadelphia to be exact), but was excited to find your blog. I've never been to Australia, but hope to visit someday! (it's been on my to-do list since I was about 8...) Anywho, I'm relating to your rotted fence, just found the same for my roof-overhang, except we won't be able to replace it for a good long while, sadly. Best of luck with the new fence, I look forward to seeing your progress!

  4. I think your new fence will be stunning. I agree with Kerry that the top of the fence seems to make the difference. Wouldn't it be nice if Council subsidised these heritage-friendly renovations in some way? Maybe that's too bureaucractic.

  5. Excellent, Will Mr Rooney be making a guest appearance?

  6. Can't wait to see the finished product, It will look amazing!
Don't you love it how the council make it all sound sooo easy???
    Have a great day.

  7. That's going to look great. I haven't seen that design before, I'm not sure it's used in Tassie. I also like those decorative wire ones.
Ps what will you do when your home is finished?

  8. We also have that fence style and it receives many a compliment:>)

  9. Lovely fence choice, does that mean no more famous fence commercials?
