Painting under the deck

This is one of those soul destroying jobs which makes renovating truly suck; painting under the deck.

The top of the deck is done. Now it's time to paint what's underneath

We've only tackled a small part of it. Turning green joists into white.
I said to Jason we could probably get away with not painting it, however he was adamant that it was the silk purse mantle he was aiming for, not the sow's ear prize. Freakin' perfectionist...sucker for punishment if you ask me.

We really wished all the joists were not painted heritage green and that it had been left 'au naturel'.

Ah! the early early 90s have a lot to answer for - from Billy Ray Cyrus' Achy Breaky Heart and the resurgence of line-dancing to heritage green painted with gay abandon in the suburbs. They are all up there on our 90s sh*t list.

There is so much more to do!! And we are being careful not to get paint on the decking boards. Painful task.

The whole underneath the deck will need two coats to cover completely...if we are lucky...

It's a huge job. We'll tackle it in manageable bites though. Bit by bit, little by little. There's no rush. I'll let you know how we get on.

P.S And speaking of early 90s music. What ever happened to Frente!?

  1. You guys exhaust me! You will be sooooo proud of yourselves when it's all done though and you can say it was all worth it : )

  2. I feel your pain.... (from someone who gets bored with painting within the first five minutes!)
Perfectionism must be frustrating, but oh so worth it in the end.

  3. I imagine your arms are getting quite a work out painting those trusses.

Frente! have done probably three or four shows in Brisbane in the last six or seven years. Angie doesn't sing Accidently Kelly Street any more though, the crowd has to sing it.

  4. Thanks Beth and Kerry. It's daunting looking at it.

Helen, I didn't realise they were still touring. Wow. I feel transported back to 1992 when I hear their songs. xx

  5. I'll be thinking of you guys when I paint the timber railing next week! oh, actually I'm only priming them....stil so much fun.....*rolls eyes*...

  6. Of course - silly me! When I asked what Jason was going to do with himself now that he finished, I forgot the underside of the decking. He can make a start on the underside of the roof-joists when he's finished that.

  7. Painting over your head has got to be the worst! Quite likely why my bathroom ceiling's still not done.

  8. I think Angie Hart is still traipsing around somewhere. Used to think they were very quirky. What about Ratcat though? I loved their soft punk look. My dad tells me that houses back in the 30's, etc didn't have much Heritage Green on them nor that insipid pumpkin colour everyone used in the 90's.

  9. I love the term 'gay abandon' ... one of my favourites.

Frente ... haven't heard of them for a while. I used to love Rat Cat. Those were the days. Full of gay abandon.

PS I bet Heritage Green isn't even worthy of the Pantone list. Keep up the good work.

  10. This is exactly why we havent painted under our deck yet. Motivation is zero! However, this post may just give hubby bit of a...oh that's right I forgot he doesn't paint! Another job allocated to my list! xx

  11. Loved Frente. I think Angie Hart's been on ABC radio here in Melbourne fairly recently. I know she was on Rockwiz a while back. Can't remember how long ago though.
As for painting. I know our place is needing a freshen up pretty soon. Hopefully it'll get done this year. Do you think Jason would like a trip to Melbourne? Pretty please.

  12. I can appreciate the horror of painting under a deck having just spent all day Sunday painting the roof of ours - it looks great, but gee I'm glad its done.

  13. I really loved the heritage green/ maroon/ cream combo when it came out in the early 90s. HOwever when I see it around Brisbane now I shudder. But there was a time and a place when it was much loved! And I totally agree with hubby - you have to paint under. My ILs have just put a deck on as part of an exxy reno, and they haven't painted under the deck (which is out front). I shudder every time I see it.

  14. You're a better man than I am Gunga Din.

  15. Sorry but Jason must just keep painting until every speck of that heritage green is banished. if i had to go under your house it would irritate me every time i looked up. Coming from the crazy woman who is de- custarding her house very late at night. Frente and Rat Cat in the same post, wow second year uni is just washing over me, holidays at a rental house at Straddie...... melx

  16. Jason has become a machine. He is the paintenator!!

  17. they are likely in the same place as Right said Fred. Nice deck!
    ~laura xx

  18. We (or should I say hubby) painted under our deck as well ... but did so in a dark chocolate colour. Couldn't believe the difference it made particularly as ours is at the front of the house and when visitors arrive they have to walk under that deck to the front door. Looks so lovely now.
