When we added the ceiling to the deck, we removed the old fluro lights which illuminated the entire space. No one was sad to see them go, despite the darkness which now reigns.

So we have to think about exterior ceiling lights. We need four lights. What to do?
I've started compiling a list of lights but I have completely no idea, really...

I'm looking for a small and discreet ceiling fitting with a modern aesthetic; the ultimate goal being ambient light when entertaining.
Maybe I shouldn't care so much and just buy tealight candles...?
Hi Brismod. I know where you are coming from as I'm having the same dilemma as well. I wanted to get one of the lovely white palm style fans (not sure what they are called) with lights but hubby is dead against it. Therefore I'm back at the drawing board. Your post has given me some inspiration and motivation! Ange
ReplyDeleteHow about this sort of thing?

Do you have any other lighting you need to look at changing? I have the name & contact of a lighting guy who I think might be able to give you no obligation advice. We found him very helpful when doing our reno & we bought lights through him & a reasonable cost. Email me if you want any further info.
ReplyDeleteMise, it's lovely. Thanks for the link. That whole site has the most interesting lights...Poor us in Australia...nothing like that exists here. x
ReplyDeleteYou sneaked in there littlemissairgap...yes, please. Just email me. xx
ReplyDeletenothing to add re lights but how is Old Jason these days?
ReplyDeleteWe have the bunker lights which give out zippo light. We ended up putting in 2 smaller fluros for when we need to cook, eat etc and garden lights with table candles for ambiance.... Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI think I like the bunker style. Functional and cute!
ReplyDeleteOh he's good, FF. Jason is having the week off work. Hopefully he'll take it easy and unwind. Thanks for asking.
ReplyDeleteHello. I like that second spotlighty on. Though that has areas ideal for collecting cobwebs.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't get too hung-up on the exterior lights ... cost would be my deciding factor.
The boob ones are my pick mainly because I can tell they would be an endless source of laughter for your family and guests, ie "time to turn the boobs on" ha but I do like the spot one too. As it is such a big area and a real extension of the kitchen and an extra living area I think a mix of lighting strengths would be good, so you can have it either nice and bright or moody for those romantic dinners.
ReplyDeleteBrismod, we also covered in our front porch beams with sheets of lining and had to re-think the lighting there. While I was looking at various fittings MONT was adamant that he'd just put in downlights. They're flush to the ceiling, create no problems with cobwebs etc...and leave a "clean" finish. In fact he put downlights in the back area as well ...you can get ones now that don't emit any heat at all. We have a couple of them above the bed in the bedroom for reading. They really are perfect, unless of course you want a design feature.
ReplyDeleteSome ambient lighting at the flick of a switch is necessary I think. I'm a candle lover, but think lights will be a good idea. Choices, choices...
ReplyDeleteI like the iRoll 65 and the Havit - but the directional second light would be handy too. We have wall-mounted bunker style lights under our mega structure (previous owners) and they are a bit useless.
ReplyDeleteI'll be interested to see what you decide...
I had that dilemma, too. I actually put a pendant light outside, over my outdoor table. I love it! It creates a real atmosphere when we have friends over for dinner, making the table really feel like an outdoor room. The only problem is that the geckos like it, too! And the guy in the light shop cleverly told us to make sure that the hanging bit wasn't chain but rather a metal rod so that it withstood stronger winds. Good luck with your choice! I actually like the first one.
ReplyDeletei'd definately go for lights darl. we use mostly LED's these days in parks and for external use. really efficient cool little lights around these days. If you want something understated maybe sink a few into the deck for a soft wash uplight around the outside, and then maybe a big fab candle hanging lantern for seating area?
ReplyDeletei'm sure whatever you do will look cool, love your style x
Thanks for all your comments and suggestions. It's food for thought and I'll keep you all posted about what we end up choosing. xx
ReplyDeleteI commented earlier, but since then I found this in an old bookmarked site. It's not small or discreet... but it's very cool http://www.habitusliving.com/desire/the-brick-outdoor-light
ReplyDeleteThis website has some cool down lights too http://www.speciallights.com.au/
Thanks for those links. I do like that orange light too. xx
