Casala chairs re-sprayed

A lovely reader, Jo from country South Australia, sent me a very cool photo of some vintage Casalino chairs which she had restored.

Vintage Casala chairs resprayed bright aqua (and cute little girl!)

Don't they look funky?

Jo said that she bought the secondhand Casalas, which were originally white fibre glass, in a country Bazaar. These chairs don't often crop up in Jo's neck of the woods so she snapped them up even though they were a little more expensive than what she wanted to pay (even after bargaining).

Jo took them to a panel beater to be re-sprayed with 2pak paint - she wanted it to be done properly as she's not great at DIY.

She said the re-spray process was quite expensive (about $200). I didn't think she should worry because she just loves the final result, as do I!

Besides her re-sprayed original chairs would still be cheaper than buying replicas if you include shipping to the country. And her new improved chairs are definitely less expensive than buying brand spanking new anything...let alone something which is iconic.

  1. That is a beautiful colour. Have you thought of spraying yours? Not necessarily saying you should but it could look amazing. xo

  2. They look fantastic - I just adore the colour! Worth the investment I'd say :)

  3. They do look fantastic in that colour. I have thought about re-spraying ours, especially after seeing Jo's results. I'd be leaning towards bright yellow though...and that might be too much of a commitment! x

  4. Excellent idea, and I think worth every penny. Well done Jo. How nice to have iconic chairs with your own unique touch. Love the colour!

  5. Hey you we both have casalas on today's blog posts...and yes the one on the back of the ute had been resprayed but no where near as well as Jo's, they look fab! We have two going up on ebay tonight aswell so it is a Casala kinda day all round ha Would be interested to know from Jo how well the respray wears over time. Bright yellow would be very funky or bright orange or lime kind of green.

  6. It's much better to have some pieces with provenance than to have everything new. Perhaps they weren't funky when they first came onto the market which is why they are all in white. A funky chair deserves a funky colour. The teal is very funky and so is yellow.

  7. I think they look wonderful. What a brave decision to get them spray painted, but Jo's made all the right decisions ... and she has the cutest little model showing how they work.

  9. Oh wow! they look amazing! Mine are still beige and mouldy. My mum is a sailor (www.zinkwazi.co.nz) and recommends getting two a two pack brush-on boat paint, it is also quite expensive, and I have not tried it yet. I am still on the lookout for another 5 Casala chairs to complete my set.

  10. Wonder if someone makes them 'Blythe' size?
They are lovely. Do they sit under a table easy enough?

  11. I love the colour too. I wouldn't never have thought of going to a panel-beater but it makes sense. It should last. I did some spray-painting today that I will reveal tomorrow - probably not as professionally finished though. x

  12. Just spotted your post when I was on 'chair up' and couldn't get here quick enough. They look fab! I have a couple that I found on the side of the road at our last council clean up (you may remember I posted about them) and need to get them resprayed too - it's nice to know that someone else has had success with this. 13. What a lovely choice of colour. This has fired my imagination and I'm looking all around the house now wondering what I can have sprayed.

  14. Gosh aren't they just delicious looking, would love a set myself but have reservations that Roboboy would only let me paint them Octonauts orange.

  15. Nice colour choice. Anyone here in inner Brisbane had their chairs sprayed by a panel shop or can recommended someone in Brisbane?

I've gone a bit crazy with my Casala hunting to the point that i've now got 13 of them...i think it is time to bring them back to their former glory after seeing this post.

@Brismod - Is the yellow you are thinking about similar to the original yellow they came in?

  16. Hi Bne_Paddy, I've only ever seen the yellow casalas sun faded...but a bright primary yellow is what I would do if we re-spray our white chairs. x

  17. @ brismod - good stuff. I spray painted one of mine black but it chips too easy and you can see the white original colour underneath where it has chipped. Something to keep in mind.

  18. Hi. I have had a pair of Casala chairs, bright yellow, since mum bought them in 1971/2. I have them on my balcony for a while and the outer layer has developed a chalky sort of finish. This effectively means that they are deteriorating but they are still in great condition since there are no scratches or ingrained dirt on the chairs. Where to from here everyone? PD
